How to feel better with ACNE -
Tip#2 STOP LOOKING!
Is this you?
Do you run to the mirror as soon as you’ve woken up to check on your acne?
Do you survey your acne with your face nearly touching the mirror?
Do you check up on your skin at every possible chance?
Well, STOP DOING IT!
You already know you have acne, and looking at it in the mirror every couple of hours isn’t going to make it go away any quicker, it just reminds you that you have acne which makes you feel bad. Feeling bad makes it harder for you to get clear. So stop it! =)
My morning ritual would be to get up, go to the bathroom, turn on all the lights, lean over the sink so I can get my face as close to the mirror as possible and look at my face from every possible angle. Then I’d say to myself. ‘Nope they’re still there… and they’re not getting any better… *sigh*’
To make things worse my bathroom has a very harsh fluorescent light placed right above the mirror which would shine the light downwards onto my face and really highlight all the craters and shadows that my acne cast onto my skin.
So basically I would start the day by making my acne look its worst and then implant the worst possible image of myself into my brain. That image is how I would think of myself for the rest of the day (or until I looked in the mirror again).
This routine was pushing my goal of having clear skin further and further from me because:
1. I was continually focussing on my acne
Remember, according to the Law of Attraction anything you focus on will only get bigger.
2. I was exaggerating how bad my acne was which made me feel worse than I should have
Why is this exaggerating you ask? Well the main reason acne made me unhappy is because I thought other people thought I was unattractive because of it.
So when I was looking in the mirror, with my face 3 cm away from it, with the fluorescent light shining on it, I was putting that close-up image of myself in my head and then thinking that that was the way that everyone else saw me.
But do you realize that most of the time, no one gets that close to your face? When you talk to someone they stand about 1 meter away from you, not 3 centimeters away!
So if you’re going to check up on your acne, before you walk away, stand back about 1 meter from the mirror and look into your own eyes (which is what people do when they talk to you) now I bet your acne is about 60% less noticable =)
Now I didn’t start doing this on purpose, it came about accidentally while I was on holiday. I was lucky because the place I was staying at happened to have a dim but warmly lit bathroom with the mirror recessed into the wall. There were probably other factors like the color of the walls, but basically it was one of those mirrors that you just always look good in. =)
So every morning I would wash my face, get dressed, do my hair etc. and I would look in the mirror and say ‘Hey! Not so bad!’ Nothing had really changed, it was just that the lighting and color of the walls made my skin look better.
So I would walk out of this place I was staying at with the exact same skin I had before but guess what? I didn’t feel so bad! Even though my skin hadn’t changed, my own perception of myself had and It COMPLETELY changed everything! The way I walked, the way I interacted with people, my level of happiness all changed because I had a different, improved image of myself implanted into my mind before I went out.
When I got back home and looked at my skin in my own bathroom mirror again, I realized how much the harsh lighting and my habit of getting right up against the mirror was making me feel bad about my skin, so I started changing my behavior and also my surroundings so that I would look better to myself, which made me FEEL better about myself. (E.g – standing back, not turning on the fluorescent light anymore, looking in the mirror less often etc.)
So basically my advice for you is:
1. Don’t look at your acne so much
If you can’t do that,
2. When you look at your acne, stand back from the mirror while doing it
If you can’t do that,
3. After checking out your acne, step back approximately 1 meter away from the mirror, look straight into your own eyes and remember this is how noticeable your acne is to other people when they talk to you
4. If you can, find a more ‘appearance-friendly’ environment for you to get ready in, whether that means buying new light bulbs or getting a new mirror for another room
Some of these tips require a little self-discipline as you will need to break the habit of looking at your acne often and close-up which is pretty deeply ingrained in many acne sufferers. But, they can be done.
It’s all about reducing your focus on acne and seeing your acne in a better light (literally!) so you will feel better about yourself and your skin.
Again, when you feel better about yourself that is a positive emotion, and when you feel positive emotions only positive things can come to you!
Peace,
The Anonymous Guru

Well AnonymousGuru, my acne has been appearing alot better. Thanks to all your help of course, its helped me alot.
Although there is one thing. I used to have severe acne (cysts and hard lumping things and it was HORRIBLE) I could stand it! and my parents said it wasn’t that bad but you could totally see them lying to me to make me feel better but it made me worse. Anyways, my acne has gotten much better by follwing your guide to clear skin. Now its mainly lots black heads and tiny tiny bumps and a couple of casual pimpes of my face. See, the thing is when every I get to the mirror and look at myself I end up popping the pimples and making it look worse and if I dont pop them I was my face like 10 times just to feel better and my pimples and skin would be waaaaay more inflamed. Any tips?

Hey Bari,
Wow, your skin has improved that much already? That’s great! I’m really happy for you =)
With your question about what to do about over-washing and popping your pimples every time you look in the mirror, short answer is:
Stop doing it!
You know you’re going to regret it afterwards, even those blackheads which look like they can be picked out really easily, just leave them be.
I do know how you feel though, I used to do the exact same thing and just end up with a bunch of red marks on my face where there were none before and wishing I’d left my face alone.
So I’ll write a little more about this in another post when I get the chance.
Thanks for the idea =)

Hey thanks for the posts! I suffer cystic, whoop ass acne. The Chuck Norris type. I have been eating paleo (meats, fruits, and vegetables) for about 3 months and it has improved a lot, but I still get about 4-5 cysts at a time (it used to be much much worse). I bought am and pm yoga as well as the wheels of life, since although I don’t suffer any sleep problems, I think it will help me relax and live a more paleolithic lifestyle (I just hope I can do the yoga, I am not particularly flexible). I can’t afford the water filter right now, what do you recommend about this? I am also still using benzoyl peroxide (which helped a little bit) and I am thinking of not giving it up until I am completely clear. What is your opinion? Thanks in advance.

Hi Alejandro,
I’m glad you have found some improvement in your acne through the change in your diet, hopefully you will also benefit from the DVD and book as much as I did =)
Also don’t worry the Yoga poses aren’t very difficult, the AM program is particularly easy.
Regarding the filter, if you can find one which you can afford that would be good though I don’t know how effective a cheap filter will be.
You might like to try just buying a couple of large bottles of spring water (a couple of weeks worth) to see if it makes a change to your acne and if it is worth purchasing the filter.
With BP, personally it did nothing for me but make my face very dry and uncomfortable, but if you can see that it is helping you then I think you should continue using it =)
If you have any more questions feel free to ask and let me know how you go with the DVD and the book!

Hey Sufy,
Although I haven’t used that particular product, my personal experience with all creams, facial soaps and scrubs is that they don’t work. In fact on some occasions they have GIVEN me acne! =)
For quite a while I haven’t used any kind of product on my face, I just rub my face with hot water while I’m in the shower and I have remained clear.
I hope this helps!

Hey anonymous Guru,
I have been trying your tip on not looking in the mirror ALL THE TIME
and it really helped! However, I find that I get sad when I have to eat because eating reminds me that it is food that made me sick. Would you care to share any suggestions. Also, I was wondering how vital is it to obtain the book and video that you have mentionned in one of your comments. I have spent a serious amount of money and time on trying to cure acne and I really do not want to keep making the same mistake. Please advise.
Thanks.

Hello Sparks,
I’m glad my tip has worked for you! =)
Regarding your attitude to your food, I understand how you feel. My only advice is to start eating healthy, and you will actually feel good when it is time to eat because you will know that what you are about to eat will help heal your body and skin. Maybe try taking up a diet like the one I did which I wrote about in Part #6?
With the book and DVD, both of them have improved many aspects of my life but if you have no trouble with sleep I would say they aren’t vital. For me personally, the areas which had the most impact on my skin and which I consider ‘vital’ was fixing my attitude / thinking and clean water. If you are interested in learning Yoga or about the Chakra system and meditation I would highly recommend them however.
Hope this helps! If you have any more questions feel free to ask =)

Thanks for the advice. But could you remove that name. My name is Sparks. Btw I also eat well. Food just reminds me of how much I have been suffering with this skin problem.

Hi Sparks,
I see what you are saying, I believe it is very important to minimize the amount of time you spend feeling bad about acne, so you have to work out a way of not letting food make you feel down. Especially as eating is an action you perform very often!
When I eat, no matter what it is (even if it’s junk food) I consciously put myself into a very positive and grateful mood by saying ‘thankyou for this delicious meal’ in my mind. I find this helps me enjoy and savour my meal which obviously makes me feel good.
Hope this helps =)

Hi Anonymous Guru,
It’s been a week and my acne has not improved. I am starting to think that I may need surgery to fix my face. I am so depressed. I can’t even look a guy straight in the face. I feel they’ll think that I am inferior to all the other girls that have clear faces.

Hi Sparks,
Keep your head up and remind yourself of the good things you have in your life. I know it’s hard but do your best not to focus too much on your skin.
Also, 1 week is far too short a time frame to start looking for results! Alot depends on the amount of toxins built up in your body and also how quickly your body heals, but I would say you probably wont see your acne disappearing for at least a few weeks. It takes years for your body to get to the point to where severe acne shows up on your skin, and unfortunately you can’t remove what has been accumulating for years in 1 week. Even when I took Accutane I didn’t see any improvements for the first 3 weeks.
Dont give up and if you have any questions please let me know! =)

Hey Lale,
I think the main thing you can do is to do your best not to worry about your acne, distract yourself from it in any way that you can.
If you are always thinking about acne and worried and scared about it, it will definitely appear in your physical reality.
If you are following the steps I have outlined I truly believe that you will be completely clear very soon!
Also I’ve been ridiculously busy recently but I hope to post the rest of my acne cure as soon as possible, hopefully there will be some advice in my coming posts that can help you further =)
